A three-country Angus Reid Public Opinion poll has found that Canadians swear more often than Americans and Britons when talking to friends, while Britons are more likely than Canadians and Americans to hear strangers swear during a conversation.
Hearing Others Swear
In the online survey of representative national samples of 1,012 Canadian, 1,013 American and 1,992 British adults, about a quarter of respondents in Canada (27%), Britain (27%) and the U.S. (26%) say they frequently hear friends use swear words during the course of a regular day.

Americans (21%) are more likely than Canadians (17%) and Britons (13%) to say that their relatives use swear words frequently.

Canadians (26%) and Britons (24%) are more likely to report that co-workers swear on a regular basis, while only 18 per cent of Americans concur.

When it comes to conversations with strangers, British respondents are more exposed to frequent foul language (35%) than people in Canada (23%) and the U.S. (21%).

Using Swear Words

A majority of Canadians (56%) readily admit that they frequently or occasionally use swear words when talking to friends. The same is true of slightly fewer Britons (51%) and Americans (46%). Only about a tenth of respondents in each of the three counties regularly swear in front of relatives. A third of Britons (33%) and Americans (32%) assure they never swear in front of family members—slightly fewer Canadians state the same (27%). In the office, Americans appear to be more reserved, as 46 per cent of them declare that they never use foul language in front of co-workers. A smaller proportion of Britons (33%) and Canadians (32%) abstain from swearing at the office. Britons are more inclined than Americans and Canadians to say that they never swear when talking to strangers (61%, compared to 58% in the U.S. and 55% in Canada).
Personal Behaviour
Just over a third of respondents in the three countries say they always alter the way they speak in order to make sure a swear word is not heard in public (U.S. 35%, BRI 37%, CAN 34%).
Slightly more Americans (18%) than Canadians (15%) and Britons (15%) say they never alter their behaviour, and if a swear word comes out they are not troubled by it.
In Canada, Quebecers (21%) are much more likely than respondents in other areas to say they never change the way they speak to avoid dropping a swear word in public. Women (17%) are more likely than men (14%) to behave this way as well.
In the U.S., respondents in the West (22%) and the Midwest (20%) are more relaxed about their behaviour and do not worry about using swear words in public. Men (20%) are more inclined than women (16%) to behave this way.
In Britain, there is little difference among genders and regions.
Appropriate and Inappropriate Use of Swear Words
Over seven-in-ten respondents in all three countries say it is inappropriate for politicians, lawyers, doctors, and police officers to swear, even when they are not aware that somebody else is listening. Between 60 per cent and 67 per cent of all respondents also deem it inappropriate for athletes to swear.
Just over half of Britons and Americans also condemn foul language used by actors and auto mechanics, while fewer Canadians agree (49% and 46%, respectively).

Police in the Australian state can now issue a fine for $100 (or $88.50 CDN) for swearing in public and $300 ($265) for disorderly conduct, such as public urination, the Courier Mail newspaper reported. The government announced the new measures Tuesday after reviewing a 12-month pilot project in South Brisbane and Townsville, which saw the number of fines go up 20% during the year. But critics of the new legislation say it's just a government money grab, which police could abuse. "This will become the thing police just slap on someone whenever they aren't happy," Queensland Council of Civil Liberties president Michael Cope told the newspaper.
